What’s in this Guide?
- Steps for registering your business in Florida
- Employer identification numbers and tax setup
- Basic accounting setup and tools
- State and federal compliance requirements
- Referrals to professional services, including CPA support
1. Choose Your Entity Type
For most startups and creatives, a single-member LLC is the most common structure due to its flexibility and protection. This structure allows pass-through taxation, simplified setup, and ease of management.
2. Register with the State of Florida
You’ll need to register your business name and entity with SunBiz.org. Fees for LLC registration are typically around $125.
3. Apply for an EIN
Every business needs an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS. This is a free and essential step for banking, taxes, and hiring. Apply online at irs.gov/ein.
4. Open a Business Bank Account
Separate personal and business finances. You’ll need your EIN and Articles of Organization to open a business account. This also helps establish your business credit and credibility.
5. Choose an Accounting System
QuickBooks and Wave Accounting are good starting tools for small business owners. Working with a CPA like Clark Schaffer ensures your books stay clean and your tax strategy is optimized.

6. State & Local Licensing
Depending on your industry, you may need a business license or occupational permit. Check with the City of Jacksonville and Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation.
7. File for State Taxes
If selling products or hiring employees, register for sales tax and unemployment tax through the Florida Department of Revenue: floridarevenue.com.
8. Stay Compliant
Maintain annual reports, renew business licenses, and track quarterly tax obligations. Consider working with a CPA who can help you stay ahead of deadlines and maximize deductions.
